Home of Navispeech



The aim of the present study is to create a speech enabled GPS based navigation system for blind people. The speech user interface was designed in consultation with the Hungarian Association of Blind and Visually Impaired People. The application will satisfy the special needs of the target user group. It is also a particular aim to use only easily accessible, low budget mobile devices. For this reason Symbian S60, 2nd edition devices and GPS receivers with Bluetooth radio link were chosen as hardware of the navigation system.

  • Reading real-time generated sentences using a TTS software instead of recorded voice database in advance: it always needs constant space (app. 1.5 Mbytes for Hungarian);
  • Scaleable display properties: font size and color profiles (font and background color combinations) improve usability for visually impaired people;
Status
  • Collaborating with blind people: they are testing NaviSpeech;
  • Route planning via Internet: access Internet from the smartphone and have the itinerary made by a route planning software and download the trip file to the phone;
  • Winner of Forum Nokia Mobile Innovation Competition 2008;
